5 Travel Surprises I Learned Visiting Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas, Medano Beach, Corazon Cabo Resort

Not all trips to Mexico goes as smoothly as one would plan. As one of Mexico’s most iconic resort destinations, Cabo San Lucas comes with a little bit more travel planning. Below are 5 travel surprises I learned when traveling to Cabo.

Aggressive Timeshare Sales People Upon Arrival

Once I got through airport customs and baggage claim, I encountered very aggressive time share sales people. I worked my way out to find my hotel shuttle. Many call this the “shark tank” or “Time Share Gauntlet.” Initially, I felt overwhelmed. Still, I got used to it after realizing they were not for me. My polite response of “no gracias” did the trick. Suggestion: Just simply ignore and bee line to your transportation kiosk.

Pricey Transportation Cost to and from Hotel / Resort

When I booked my shuttle to the hotel, one choice was to reserve a one-way ticket. It was very affordable. On your return, you can order a hotel shuttle, taxi, or Uber to get back to the airport. Generally, you’d book a round trip ticket. Still, I found that it costs way more to book a round trip shuttle. Most hotels / resorts are located at least 30+ minutes away from the airport. My one way ticket was a mere $26 US coming back was nearly double. If you are by yourself, it costs a little more. If you are with a group, it is more affordable. Suggestion: Check with the site you booked your airfare, they just have a better deal especially for Cabo.

Extra WiFi | Hotel Resort Fees Cost More

I know this is a no brainer, but I was surprised that WiFi was an extra cost. Again, I’m a visitor to Mexico, things are done differently. I expected the WiFi to be included but be prepared on this fee. Suggestion: Check with your phone service to see if it includes WiFi or lowest roaming fees.

Expensive Hotel / Resort Restaurants Costs

When you are at a resort in a remote setting, you are to spend most of your time there. You can even spend all of it. Enjoying the various restaurants, bars, spa, pool service, any way to keep you there to spend when at resort. The disadvantage, of course, is that they have you there and the prices are set. You really have no recourse and no other options than to leave the property to dine elsewhere. Suggestion: Before reserving resort, check their restaurant / menu prices. Additionally, check the restaurants surrounding your selected hotel. These can serve as a substitute to dining at the resort on some days.

Not all Businesses Accept Credit Cards

solo efectivo (cash only) is what I’m greeted with at some establishments. I walked into one of the nearby shopping malls. I was surprised that quite a few restaurants and businesses were not accepting credit cards. I imagine it’s for cost-saving effort as accepting credit cards is a fee to the business. Suggestion: Be sure to have Mexican Pesos on hand always. Locals prefer it.

I realize I’m coming from a visiting American perspective. I don’t intend to change another country’s way of doing business. Still, sometimes these slight inconveniences can impede ways to better serve visitors. Some Americans and other foreigners live or own properties in Cabo. For the short time I’ve been there, I know there’s potential for more improvements when traveling to that region.

Overall, this iconic Mexican beach resort destination is beautiful, breathtaking, and the people are wonderful. There’s always good and bad aspects of traveling. In this case, these 5 were quite notable. I’ll be back, definitely better prepared in navigating my next vacation to Cabo.
